How
do Binaural Beat Frequencies Work?
Everything
in the universe has a natural rhythm. Often this rhythm can be
expressed as cycles per second or Hertz (Hz). When two frequencies
are placed together, it is natural for them to begin finding a
common ground and synchronizing with each other. This is called
the "frequency-following response." For example, if
you place two grandfather clocks (the kind with the long pendulum)
next to each other and start their pendulums swinging, their movements
will be out of sync with each other. Return in a week and you'll
find the pendulums have started swinging together in near perfect
synchronization. This is an example of a natural phenomenon called
Entrainment.
Your
mind works in much the same way. In your normal, waking state,
your mind operates at anywhere from 8 Hz to 24 Hz depending on
your level of alertness. If it is exposed to a pulse of about
the same frequency, over a short time it will entrain to the frequency
of the pulse. Once entrained the frequency-following response
will allow the mind to slowly change frequencies as the pulse
changes.
Underneath
the music in Music for Balance are subtle
signals that, when played on a stereo system, create what is known
as a Binaural Beat Frequency (it is necessary for the listener
to have the ability to hear with both ears for this effect to
be produced in the mind). When the mind is exposed to Binaural
Beat Frequencies, it begins to entrain to them. After a while,
the frequencies are gradually slowed. The mind follows the signal
down from a level associated with the waking state to the Theta
brainwave state (5 Hz to 8 Hz) which is associated with reports
of relaxed, meditative, and creative states. This state also helps
one in falling asleep.
In
Music for Balance, once the Binaural
Beat Frequencies reach the Theta state they continually shift
slowly and only slightly so as to keep the mind engaged. Below
is a graph that shows the frequencies created on the CD from the
start of the first track to the end of the last. Each song flows
into the next without changing or pausing the binaural beat frequencies
to ensure you stay in your deeply relaxed state. |
